A normal indoor comfort system that uses a furnace and air conditioner (or heat pump) is referred to as a split system. This is because part of the equipment is located outside, and part of the equipment is located inside. Sometimes a home addition or office doesn’t have ductwork installed which is a requirement for a split system to work. In the past the solution has been noisy window and/or floor units. However, ductless systems have made those a things of the past!
A ductless system is also called a mini-split because it too locates equipment both inside and outside the home. The ductless air conditioner or heat pump is installed outside, while the ductless air handler is mounted on a nearby internal wall, ceiling or floor. See the image to the right for an example.
The indoor air handlers are whisper quiet as they pull air from the living space and filter, condition and then redistribute the air into the room. More than one internal air handler can be powered by a single outdoor unit, offering room by room comfort control.
Ductless systems boast the same high efficiency ratings of their big brothers, which some models trumping even full sized units! You can install a ductless system as cooling only, or purchase a ductless heat pump for cooling and heating convenience.
